Johnny Depp is reportedly set to play infamous murdering barber Sweeny Todd in a new film.

The heartthrob actor is planning to reunite with his favourite director Tim Burton - who he has worked with on six films including 'Charlie And The Chocolate Factory' - for the movie about the hairdresser who butchered his customers and used their remains as pie-filling.

A source is quoted in Britain's The Sun newspaper as saying: "No contracts have been signed but Depp and Burton are close to reaching an agreement.

"They are keen to work together again and Sweeney Todd is looking certain to be their next project."

Earlier this month, hunky Depp was voted the most popular star in Hollywood for the second year running.

The 42-year-old actor - who lives with long-term love Vanessa Paradis - beat fellow celebrities including Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie to take the top spot in the poll, conducted by website imdb.com - the Internet Movie Database.

The website revealed the handsome star was more searched for than any other star in 2005 - including Jennifer Aniston and Tom Cruise, who were frequently in the news because of their love lives over the last 12 months.
