Suranne Jones, who used to play man-eater Karen McDonald in Coronation Street, has admitted that leaving the popular soap caused her some serious mental problems.

"I had a sort of breakdown," the 27-year-old actress told the Daily Star.

"It wasn't that I needed help, but all the emotions from the previous four and a half years suddenly hit me at once."

Suranne broke up with her boyfriend, fellow Weatherfield thesp Jonathan Wrather who played Joe Carter, when on holiday directly after leaving the Street, which might have exacerbated her fraught emotions.

It would seem that she is fine now though, as she is starring as a private dick in current ITV drama Vincent opposite Cockney legend Ray Winstone.

But Suranne seemed to suggest that a return to Coronation Street hasn't been completely ruled out.

"I was extremely happy at Corrie and it would be nice to see what Karen is doing a few years down the line," she said.
