Supermarket CCTV Cameras
Sainsbury to use CCTV cameras to stop people from stealing items from self-service checkouts.

Sainsbury is taking action to stop thieves from stealing goods from self-service checkouts. It is set to install CCTV cameras and mirrors at 300 stores to ensure that shoppers scan the items and pay for them before they head out. The cameras, which will be monitored by staff, are also expected to increase in-store safety.
A spokesman said: “This is in hundreds of stores and has been in some for almost a year. The safety of our customers and colleagues is extremely important to us, which is why we invest in a range of measures to keep everyone safe.’
A recent study has found that one in four shoppers who use self-service fail to pay for an item. A separate research last year revealed that approximately £3.2billion of goods are stolen from self-service checkouts each year.
The study also found that more than 60per cent of non-payers decide to just put the items in their bag because scanners fail to recognise the products. These shoppers claim that they found it easier to steal the item rather than try to sort it out or call for help. Meanwhile, 36per cent of respondents blames their action on memory lapse.
