Scientists at Stanford University said that they’ve developed a new mobile phone battery that can be fully charged in just one minute. Made from aluminium, the battery is said to be cheaper to produce than the lithium batteries and offers “unprecedented charging times.”
Professor Honjie Dai, who helped develop the battery, explained: ‘We have developed a rechargeable aluminium battery that may replace existing storage devices, such as alkaline batteries, which are bad for the environment and lithium-ion batteries, which occasionally burst into flames.
‘Our new battery won’t catch fire, even if you drill through it.’
‘Another feature of the aluminium battery is flexibility, he said.
‘You can bend and fold it, so it has the potential for use in flexible electronic devices.
‘Aluminium is also a cheaper metal than lithium’.
Also, the new prototype reportedly lasts 7,500 charges before it loses its capacity. Current lithium batteries can only withstand 1,000 charges.
