While summer can make us think of lazy days sitting in the park or by the beach eating ice cream, for parents one question comes to mind.
How will I keep my kids entertained?!
And with the average child’s attention span being two to three minutes for every year of their age, setting them up with just one activity for the whole day won’t be sufficient.
Here’s the good news. Thanks to the sheer abundance of resources available online, it’s easier than ever to keep your kids occupied - even when the sun isn’t shining! Here are five online activities to keep your kids busy during the school holidays.
-
Online Games
Whether your kid prefers multi-player games, world-building games, or something more cerebral, there’s genuinely something for everyone nowadays on the web.
Card games such as the gin rummy game are now available online, while if your child is interested in single-player games, online Klondike solitaire is an excellent option. You can read more about solitaire including gameplay tips and tricks on this online solitaire blog.
-
Online Revision Sites
While your little ones might groan about studying during the holidays, if they work hard during summer they’re much more likely to find the new school year easier when they return in September.
Studying doesn’t have to be boring, with tons of online revision sites making studying interactive, dynamic, and fun.
If it’s hard to convince your kids to study during the holidays, reward them with a more exciting activity afterward, such as playing in the park or going to the movies.
-
Sporcle
Want to fool your kids into learning without even realizing they’re learning? You need to send them to play on Sporcle. Sporcle is an online trivia site that you can use to test your knowledge on almost any topic, from the U.S. states to musicals.
Most of the games on Sporcle give you a specified period of time, such as 1-5 minutes, and ask you to name as many things as you can from a particular topic. This might be countries in Europe or types of animals.
If you have more than one child, you can allow them to unleash their inner competitive side by playing against their siblings, or, if you dare, against you!
-
YouTube for Kids
If your kids are always asking to watch YouTube but you’re worried about them finding unsuitable content, don’t fear. YouTube has a setting you can switch on for children, so they’ll only see content that’s suitable for their age group.
From there, they can watch cartoons, shows, and young creators that they love, keeping them entertained for hours!
-
Creative Apps and Sites
If your child is the creative type, there are tons of sites and apps they can use to unleash their inner artistic side. Canva is a great example - it’s a free design tool that anybody can access and use to create graphic design content.
Don’t want to give your child access to the internet? No problem! Microsoft Paint is a classic tool for keeping young ones busy.
