Streaming Displaces DVDs
Lovefilm by Post to close in the UK as Amazon goes streaming only.
10:06 17 August 2017
Amazon’s Lovefilm by Post will discontinue their service that allows customers to rent DVDs and Blu-rays by the end of October. The tech giant admits that its decision was due to the growing popularity of streaming services.
The service, which was launched in 2004, enabled subscribers to receive DVDs by post and send them back when they had been watched. In 2014, the online section of the service was combined with Amazon’s existing Prime Instant Video service.
An Amazon spokesman said: “We have very much enjoyed delivering the Lovefilm by Post service to our customers.
“However, over the last few years we’ve seen a decreasing demand for DVD and Blu-ray rental as customers increasingly move to streaming.
“Due to this, we will be closing the Lovefilm By Post business on 31st October 2017.
“We are committed to finding alternative roles for all Lovefilm employees within Amazon.”
