Storm Angus had battered Britain bringing 106mph winds and heavy rains leaving hundreds of homes without power and causing a 200m-long cargo ship to hit a barge full of rocks in the English Channel. 23 of the 35 crew members were evacuated by helicopter while the rest remained on board and had since moved the ship to a safe anchorage at Dungeness. The coastguard declared the situation “a major incident.”
However, it has been confirmed that the Saga Sky incident left “no sign of pollution” in surrounding waters.
Storm Angus, which is the first named storm of the season, has brought gusts of up to 106mph recorded 23 miles off the coast of Margate, while gusts hit 80mph at Langdon Bay, both in Kent.
The storm caused power interruption leaving more than 1,000 properties without power in the south west of England. Almost all power had been restored by Sunday afternoon, the Western Power Distribution had confirmed.
On Sunday evening, there were five flood warnings in place across England and Wales. Angus has now moved out into the North Sea but bad weather is expected to continue into Monday.
