Stirling Council Smart Bins on Hold
Stirling Council plans to sell ad space on £94,000 smart bins have been put on hold.

Last month, Stirling Council invested £94,000 to purchase 30 solar powered smart bins that have the capability to indicate when they are full. In an effort to recoup their cost, the authority has planned selling ad spaces on the side of the bins.
However, for contractual reasons, the council’s plans have to be put on hold. It has emerged that as a condition of the European Grant Funding, which covered 40per cent of the cost of the project, paid-for advertising cannot feature in the post space until December 2019.
A council spokesperson said: “The council instead uses these spaces as a valuable tool to promote local campaigns, public information and encourage more people to dispose of their litter in a considerate manner.”
The bins have been placed in Craigs Roundabout, Laurencecroft Road, Raploch Road, Bannockburn, St Ninians, Causewayhead and Riverside.
However, Conservative Group environment spokespersonRoss Oxburgh, said: “The bins may be smart but everything else about this debacle certainly is not. People will already be staggered by the cost and choice of locations but now we discover that the much vaunted advertising opportunity that could at least try and offset some of the huge bill is not allowed for two years.”
