Britney Spears has reportedly earned a massive $500,000 through the product placement featured in her new video, Hold it Against Me.
Companies are thought to have paid the star a combined total of $500,000 to feature their items in her new video, which premiered on 18 February.
Twenty-nine-year-old Britney uses her own brand of perfume, switches on a Sony flat screen television and uses a specific type of make-up in the four and a half minute production.
She is also shown browsing the dating site PlentyOfFish.com, with the company allegedly shelling out $200,000 for the privilege.
Spears isn’t the first star to take advantage of product placement. Lady Gaga and Beyoncé are seen drinking out of Diet Coke cans, taking pictures with a Polaroid camera and making calls on a Virgin mobile in their video for Telephone.
Katy Perry has defended Britney for her decision to use product placement, after some fans said the video was more like an advert than a music video.
The singer posted on her Twitter page:
“Most, if not all popsters welcome deals with products to offset costs of big budget videos in these recessional, music industry times.
"I’ve used them in my videos before and am happy to be able to make a better video because of [it].”
