Soap making or zeep maken is an age-old craft that allows for creativity and personalization, and incorporating jojoba oil into the process can elevate the quality of the soap significantly. Jojoba olie, derived from the seeds of the jojoba plant (Simmondsia chinensis), is a liquid wax ester known for its moisturizing and skin-nourishing properties. It closely mimics the natural oils found in human skin, making it an excellent ingredient for soap making.
Benefits of Jojoba Oil in Soap Making
- Moisturizing Properties: Jojoba oil is renowned for its deep moisturizing capabilities. Unlike other oils, it doesn’t evaporate easily, providing a lasting hydration effect. This makes soaps with jojoba oil particularly beneficial for those with dry or sensitive skin.
- Skin Compatibility: Since jojoba oil is similar to human sebum, it is readily absorbed by the skin without clogging pores. This makes it suitable for all skin types, including oily and acne-prone skin, as it helps balance oil production.
- Antioxidant and Anti-Inflammatory: Jojoba oil is rich in antioxidants like vitamin E, which helps protect the skin from oxidative stress. Its anti-inflammatory properties can soothe irritated skin, making it an ideal addition to soap for those with conditions like eczema or psoriasis.
- Shelf Stability: Jojoba oil is highly stable and resistant to rancidity, ensuring that soaps made with it have a longer shelf life compared to those made with other oils.
Soap Making Process with Jojoba Oil
There are two main methods for making soap: melt and pour, and cold process. Here, we'll focus on the cold process method, which allows for greater customization and incorporates jojoba oil more effectively.
Ingredients:
- 16 ounces of olive oil
- 8 ounces of coconut oil
- 4 ounces of jojoba oil
- 4 ounces of shea butter
- 4.5 ounces of lye (sodium hydroxide)
- 10.5 ounces of distilled water
- Essential oils for fragrance (optional)
- Natural colorants (optional)
Equipment:
- Digital scale
- Thermometer
- Safety gear (gloves, goggles)
- Heat-resistant containers
- Immersion blender
- Soap molds
Steps:
- Prepare the Lye Solution: Carefully add lye to distilled water (never the other way around) in a heat-resistant container. Stir until fully dissolved and set aside to cool. Ensure you are working in a well-ventilated area and wearing safety gear.
- Melt and Mix Oils: In a separate container, measure and combine olive oil, coconut oil, jojoba oil, and shea butter. Heat gently until all oils are melted and thoroughly mixed. Allow the oil mixture to cool to around 100°F (38°C).
- Combine Lye Solution and Oils: Once both the lye solution and oils are at the correct temperature, slowly pour the lye solution into the oils. Use an immersion blender to mix until trace is achieved. Trace is the point at which the mixture thickens and leaves a trail on the surface.
- Add Additives: At trace, add any desired essential oils and natural colorants. For example, lavender essential oil and a purple mica can create a soothing lavender soap.
- Pour into Molds: Pour the soap mixture into prepared molds, tapping them on the counter to remove air bubbles. Cover with a towel to insulate and let it sit for 24-48 hours.
- Unmold and Cure: After the soap has hardened, remove it from the molds and cut it into bars if necessary. Place the bars in a well-ventilated area to cure for 4-6 weeks. This curing time allows the soap to fully harden and the saponification process to complete.
Customizing Your Jojoba Oil Soap
Fragrance and Color: Essential oils like lavender, peppermint, or tea tree can add therapeutic benefits and pleasant scents. Natural colorants such as clays, herbs, and botanicals can enhance the visual appeal.
Exfoliants: Adding natural exfoliants like ground oats, poppy seeds, or dried herbs can provide a gentle scrub effect, enhancing the soap’s functionality.
Botanical Additions: Incorporating ingredients like aloe vera, honey, or chamomile can further boost the nourishing properties of the soap.
