Smart Meters Empower Homeowners
Smart meters empower homeowners to save on their energy costs.
19:15 12 August 2018
Smart meters are the next generation of gas and electricity meters that offer a range of intelligent “smart” functions like smart TVs and smartphones.
Smart meters are currently being installed across the UK as part of a national upgrade to our energy system. They show homeowners how much energy they use in pounds and pence so they are able to make small changes to the way they use energy in order to save money on their bills. Information provided by smart meters also empowers consumers to choose a better tariff or switch supplier.
Over 11 million homeowners are now using these meters. 80per cent of them say that they have a better idea of their energy cost while 90per cent say they are satisfied with the installation process. Meanwhile, 8 out of 10 say they would recommend the smart meters to friends and family.
Every month, over 400,000 new smart meters are being installed in Great Britain. Ofgem holds suppliers to account to ensure they are meeting their obligations to roll out smart meters and can fine energy companies for missing targets.
