If you’re considering making your home smart, you can start by getting yourself a Google Home, a smart speaker developed by Google that enables users to interact with services through simple voice commands.

 

The £110 device can be “trained” so it can recognise the voice of your family members to customise responses accordingly. Each family member will need to set up a Google account or sync their existing account with the Google Home app.

 

When choosing the best location for the device, experts recommend the central gathering place in your house, which could be the kitchen or the living room. If you have a rather large house, you may need multiple Home units to cover everything.

 

Once your Google Home is installed, you’re ready to start building a voice-controlled smart home. Among the devices that work well with Google Home include the Nest Learning Thermostat and a Belkin Switch or colour-changing bulbs from either Lifx or Phillips. Each smart home device that you purchase for your home will need to be set up using their dedicated app. Once they are connected to the Internet, they can be easily synced to your Google Home account, which means that you can control them by giving Home simple voice commands.
