SIP Server
A SIP server manages all SIP calls in a network and is referred to as SIP Proxy or a Registrar.

A SIP server is the main component of an IP PBX and is responsible for the management of all SIP calls in the network. More specifically, it:
· Sets up a session between at least two endpoints
· Negotiates the specifications and media parameters using SDP protocol
· Makes adjustments to specifications and media parameters during the session
· Substitutes one end point with a new endpoint
· Terminates a session
Although the SIP server is recognised as one of the most important parts of a SIP-based IP-PBX phone system, it does not actually transmit or receive any media. Within the content of an IP-PBX environment, SIP server and its media server reside on the same machine. However, the two can be separated in order to better handle the workload and distribute the load to multiple media servers.
