SIP gateways function by collecting and configuring data collected from devices mentioned above so the modem can process the information. The information is then sent over the Internet where it is reconfigured into real data by either a telephone network or another SIP gateway. Programs like Skype, Windows Live Messenger, and Twinkle use SIP sessions to simulate a telephone experience over the Internet.
