Small offices and businesses can benefit from SIP gateways that help bridge the gap between data streams and the Internet to run multiple communication programs including video conferencing, account management software, instant messaging, and media distribution, among others. SIP gateways also allow for multiple audio and video connections to take place at one time over the Internet, making it essential in VoIP networks.
A SIP gateway is a device that connects to an Internet modem and relays data that it reads from various devices including webcams, microphones, telephone communication system, and computer software. SIP gateways can be combined with VoIP gateways to maximise functionality without overcrowding the work area.
SIP gateways function by collecting and configuring data collected from devices mentioned above so the modem can process the information. The information is then sent over the Internet where it is reconfigured into real data by either a telephone network or another SIP gateway. Programs like Skype, Windows Live Messenger, and Twinkle use SIP sessions to simulate a telephone experience over the Internet. Other popular SIP gateway devices and software include SIP 4FXS VoIP Gateway and Ekiga.
