Types of Hackers And What They Do
As in many other professions, hackers also have their hierarchy. Depending on their motives, they can be grouped into different categories. The following are major types of hackers today.
- Script hackers are low-level hackers. These are usually ambitious young people that have some technical knowledge. They mostly use hacking as a way to gain access to simple passwords or they discover system vulnerabilities by accident, just by playing with technology.
- Ethical hackers, or also known as white-hat hackers, are a level above script hackers. They are more trustworthy because they use their skills to help others instead of damaging someone`s system. They are usually focused on protecting computer systems and not attacking them.
- Grey-hat hackers are in-between white-hat and black-hat hackers. Usually, these hackers have started with unauthorized activities and hacking systems with bad intentions, but later they have turned to become better and help companies to find system vulnerabilities. They can be best described as reformed hackers that used to be bad, but now they are good and helpful.
- Black-hat hackers hack systems to fulfill their bad intentions. They are focused on breaking the law to gain personal benefits. A form of black-hat hackers is the so-called suicide hackers. These are often labeled as terrorist hackers. One example of such are the group Anonymous, which attacks public organizations, corporations, and government websites.
Will a Hacker Help Your Company?
Although many companies have their specialized IT sectors, they are usually not enough for more advanced protection. Hiring an ethical hacker knows the mindset of bad hackers and can take proper measures for protection. When you look to hire a hacker, first you need to consider some things such as the main reason for hiring them. Do you want to strengthen systems, verify its stability, or improve the cyber-readiness of your company?
Hiring a hacker can help your company discover whether someone has penetrated your computer systems or network. The hacker can also easily detect whether your software is up to date with the latest security patches and can point to weaknesses and threats that can damage your systems. We can conclude that hiring an ethical hacker can be very beneficial for any company, and can result in increased cyber-security awareness and improved protection of the company`s system and network.
