Sheffield is number 5 in the list of the UK's most Big Brother-esque cities, next to London, Birmingham, Glasgow, and Manchester. New figures claim that Sheffield has a staggering 43,000 cameras - or one in every 13 residents. Installation company cctv.co.uk says 96per cent of cameras in the UK are owned by homeowners and private businesses.
Spokesman James Ritchey said the rise was ‘driven mainly by residents installing home CCTV and doorbell cams… their popularity is relentless as the cost of technology comes down,’ he said.
The report shows that London has 689,000 public and private cameras while Birmingham, which is second on the list, has 83,000. Then comes Leeds with 58,000 and Glasgow on 46,000.
