A Shakespearean theatre is planned for Prescot and is set to be built beside a new international university college that focuses on Shakespearean drama. The project is supported by Vanessa Regrave and Dame Helen Mirren, among others.
The 350-seat north playhouse will cost £19m and the Shakespeare Trust hopes a combination of public finance and private donors can pay for the project. The theatre will be built based on designs for The Cockpit in Whitehall drawn by Inigo Jones in 1629.
It is hoped that the new theatre will form part of a Shakespearean triangle linking Prescot with Strateford Upon Avon and The Globe in Bankside, London. The plans for the new playhouse are due to be considered by Knowsley Council Planning committee.
