The man who brought Sex and the City to the small screen is planning to make his movie debut.

Darren Star, who turned Candace Bushnell's novel about the lives of modern women in New York into one of the biggest TV phenomena of all time, is set to direct a new romantic comedy blockbuster.

Sadly, Star will not be directing the much-discussed Sex and the City movie - which appears to be all but dead, following irreconcilable differences between Kim Cattrall and her co-stars.

Nor will he be writing his directorial debut, 100 Weddings, which has been penned by Ellen Simon and Erin Cramer.

The movie tells the story of a female war reporter who is demoted and must report on 100 weddings before getting her old job back. The hard-bitten cynical hack finds love in the course of her penance, as one might expect with a romcom.

The project is being produced by Working Title Films, the British company behind such films as High Fidelity and About a Boy.

Star's other TV credits include Beverley Hills 90210 and Melrose Place.
