The film American Sniper could very well have broken box office records last weekend but it is currently more famous for provoking unintentional laughter after the war drama was widely mocked for using an obviously fake baby throughout the film.
One scene showed lead stars Bradley Cooper and Sienna Miller passing a crying child to each other. Sadly, the baby is very clearly made of plastic and was completely motionless.
Fans took to Twitter to mock the scene. One user, citing the film’s roster of Oscar nominations this year, said: “The only nomination I'd give American Sniper is for best fake baby.”
Another one said: “I don't get all the American Sniper love. But I do understand Bradley Cooper's nom. He had to hold that fake baby and not laugh. That's skill!”
“I have never seen so many terrible fake babies in one film,” Camilla Long wrote in The Sunday Times, while website HitFlix was amused that “Cooper looks like he’s just plain never held a baby”.
Meanwhile, American Sniper executive producer and screenwriter Jason Hall offered an explanation. He tweeted: “Hate to ruin the fun but real baby #1 showed up with a fever. Real baby #2 was no show. (Clint voice) Gimme the doll, kid.”
