Tesco was forced to place security tags on its shopping baskets as shoppers started stealing them since last Monday when the government’s 5p bag tax was introduced. Bosses confirmed that the move is to prevent more thefts from the supermarket.
A spokesman for Tesco said that there had been a significant increase of stolen basket from the store on Featherstall Road in Westwood, Old Ham since October 05.
Meanwhile, the government move to imposed tax aims to reduce the use of single-use plastic carrier bags and encourage more people to re-use bags.
A spokesman for Tesco said: "Around a third of the baskets were taken and we need to provide the best possible service to our customers and this includes having baskets available for shoppers.
"As a result, to prevent further thefts security tags have been attached to the remaining baskets to prevent them being stolen."
He added that a large number of shoppers have been bringing their own shopping bags or paying for carrier bags since the scheme has taken effect.
