Scottish Centre for Macromolecular Imaging Opens

The Scottish Centre for Macromolecular Imaging (SCMI) is officially open.

The Scottish Centre for Macromolecular Imaging officially opened in Glasgow on September 11. The centre, which was unveiled by Nobel Laureate for Chemistry Richard Henderson, is funded by The Scottish Funding Council, The Medical Research Council, The Scottish Universities Life Sciences Alliance, University of Edinburgh, University of Dundee, University of Glasgow, University of St. Andrews and The MJM Smith Trust. The state-of-the-art centre aims to provide access to cutting-edge facilities for macromolecular structure determination and cellular tomography.

 

The new centre is expected to play a crucial role in the discovery of treatments for a number of deadly diseases, including cancer. It houses a large and powerful electron microscope, including the JEOL Cryo ARM 300 microscope, the first of its kind in Scotland and one of only a few worldwide.
