Scarborough CCTV Upgrade

Scarborough CCTV cameras set to be upgraded with an investment of £366k.

CCTV cameras in Scarborough are set to be upgraded with a £366k new funding. 

 

The borough's CCTV control room currently monitors a total of 244 cameras that are strategically located in town centres and key locations, including Barrowclfif, Northstead, Scarborough and Whitby. The CCTV cameras are also used by the local council to protect its own assets, specifically the Filey Evron Centre, Scarborough indoor market and Dean Road Depot. 

 

A recent report has confirmed that the majority of equipment being used in the control room is obsolete and much of the recording software is no longer supported by manufacturers. Meanwhile, many of the cameras in use are analogue and urgently need upgrading. 

 

Cabinet member for Stronger Communities Carl Maw said: "Much of the current equipment is nearing its life end and needs upgrading to continue its service. Some of the analogue cameras, particularly in Scarborough's center are more than 20 years old" 

 

"Not only does CCTV helps in crime detection, it also helps police officers get convictions, such as the 2017 murder outside the town hall, and it also provides evidence to acquit people who are accused of crimes."
