Openreach has recently confirmed that Salisbury is the first entire city in the United Kingdom to gain access to its fibre-to-the-premises (FTTP) broadband technology. The announcement comes in a time when a super-fast and reliable internet connection is considered a basic need as people isolate and work from home amid the Covid-19 lockdown.
Openreach full-fibre network allows thousands of people to work remotely giving them easy access to public services and greater opportunities for the next generation of home-grown businesses. The firm said that the service's potential productivity benefit can be up to £59bn to the UK economy by 2025 as it enables 400,000 more people to work from home.
Openreach CEO Clive Selley, said: "This new digital platform can help the UK's economy to bounce back more quickly from the Covid-19 pandemic - and that can start right here in Salisbury. A full recovery is likely to be measured in years rather than months, but there is a stong evidence that points to full-fibre broadband being able to turbo-charge that process.
"For Salisbury's homes, shops, GP surgeries and schools, full-fibre broadband will mean fewer broadband faults, faster connections and a consistent, reliable network that will serve the city for decades to come. From home working to healthcare, digital trade to entertainment, the possibilities that this new network can bring are almost limitless."
