News presenter Liz Wahl has accused a Russian government-funded TV channel of “whitewashing the actions” of Vladimir Putin and subsequently resigned live on national TV.
The US anchor for Russia Today America, said: "I'm proud to be an American and believe in disseminating the truth and that is why after this newscast, I'm resigning."
Moscow has been accused of invading Ukraine’s Crimea region and was warned by the United States because of its action. This took place after months of pro-European protests that saw the nation’s pro-Russian president, Viktor Yanukovych ousted.
In a statement on Wahl's actions, Russia Today said: "When a journalist disagrees with the editorial position of his or her organisation, the usual course of action is to address those grievances with the editor, and, if they cannot be resolved, to quit like a professional.
"But when someone makes a big public show of a personal decision, it is nothing more than a self-promotional stunt.
"We wish Liz the best of luck on her chosen path."
