Rotherham Town Centre Wifi Plans
Rotherham Town Centre to have free WiFi soon.
18:06 12 May 2018
Proposals to have free public access WiFi internet in town centre submitted to Rotherham Council are set to be discussed at a council meeting on May 21. Under the proposal, the service will cover public open spaces such as Clifton Park and will be provided by a third party with no cost to the council.
Cllr Denise Lelliott, RMBCs cabinet member for jobs and the local economy, said: “In our increasingly digital age, people like to use social media and the internet on the go.
“A key priority for the council is to extend prosperity and as the town centre repositions itself as a leisure destination, there will be more people living and socialising in the town centre.
“Free Wi-Fi in public spaces and public buildings will really help residents and tourists connect with each other and stay in touch with local events, making the town centre a more vibrant destination and supporting local businesses to thrive and grow.”
A council spokeswoman added: “If cabinet and commissioners agree the plans, the council will undertake a competitive procurement exercise for a contractor to provide the service, with the successful bidder then installing the necessary equipment and running the free Wi-Fi service.”
