Town halls have admitted to using CCTV cameras on lorries to snoop on families. The cameras are used to film when bins are not put out by residents, if they are left in the wrong place, and if residents are contaminating their recycling.
Some footage that shows bin men being subjected to abuse has been passed to police.
Officials said: “The footage is used to investigate alleged vehicle accidents, health and safety breaches and in some cases missed collections.”
An investigation has found that more than six in ten councils are now using CCTV on their bin lorries.
Privacy campaigners said that the move is a breach of privacy.
Griff Ferris of the campaign group Big Brother Watch said: “People’s rubbish-related habits do not need to be monitored by surveillance cameras.
“This is a complete breach of people’s privacy.”
Meanwhile, Andrew Allison of the Freedom Association said that it is a waste of money. He said, “Considering councils are trying to save cash, why are they spending so much money in this way?”
