CCTV cameras are now being used to monitor four seafront shelters at Redcar after they were deliberately set on fire by arsonists. The incidents, which took place in 2015, 2016 and 2018, caused thousands of pounds worth of damage.
Two cameras have been installed at each of the four shelters in the hopes to put an end to the days of the damaging blazes.
A Redcar and Cleveland Council spokesman said: “Our seafront shelters are well loved and well used and our residents have been disappointed on thankfully rare occasions where they have been damaged.
“We can confirm we have installed eight CCTV cameras in our shelters to prevent this happening in future.
“Vandals are warned any evidence of criminal activity will be passed to the police as a matter of course.”
Ward councillor Carl Quartermain said: "We've wanted CCTV at those shelters for a long time, so these cameras are very welcome."
