Rail Delivery Group adds hundreds of new and refurbished carriages to the train network.

Passengers hit by poor punctuality and rising fares have been promised by the Rail Delivery Group with hundreds of new and refurbished carriages. Apart from more seats, they are also promised improved accessibility, mobile phone charging points, air conditioning and free WiFi connection. Between now and 2021, train companies will provide 6,400 extra services and will add 7,000 new vehicles to the network. Meanwhile, some of the oldest trains currently in used will be retired.

 

Operators set to introduce new carriages are the Caledonian Sleeper, Great Western Railway, Govia Thameslink Railway, Hull Trains, Greater Anglia, London North Eastern Railway, Northern, Scotrail, South Western Railway, London Overground and Trans Pennine Express.

 

Robert Nisbet, regional director of the Rail Delivery Group, said: "Not just what they see when they get on board these carriages - more seats, better seats, wifi that actually works, toilets that are also working," he said.

 

"It also means the trains should be more punctual as well, because they'll be newer, fresher rolling stock.

 

"This is not just in specific pockets around the country, this is all over the country. From Scotland, northern England, London, the South West, Wales as well."
