Using its Snapdragon X50, which can support up to 5Gbps, the firm was able to deliver 1.24Gbps during the test. This marks the first ever successful trial of a 5G connection. The company also announced its first reference design smartphone that uses mmWave 5G.
The firm said that it expects devices with the Snapdragon X50 modem to be available in the first half of 2019. This is earlier than what has been previously forecasted. This announcement confirms that we are step closer to getting 5G.
Qualcomm said that the test “will drive a new generation of cellular technology forward.” It added that the move to 5G would be like getting electricity and will pave the way for unlimited data.
Christiano Amon, president of Qualcomm Technologies, said: “This major milestone and our 5G smartphone reference design showcase how Qualcomm Technologies is driving 5G NR in mobile devices to enhance mobile broadband experiences for consumers around the world,"
