Potential positive and negative financial impacts of Scotland’s tourism situation
Scotland faces hurdles to re-establishing growth of their tourism industry.

Scotland has recently been a popular destination for those desiring to trek through the beautiful countryside. People have visited from all over to get a glimpse of the beautiful land. The country receives a substantial amount of funding through their tourism, but recently, apparently they saw a decline in the tourism industry’s growth.
Many people are thought to be concerned regarding the financial impact of reduced tourism on the economy, and what it will mean if the trend continues.
The irony is that the wide, vast expanses that draw tourists also can create difficulties for the tourists. Walking holidays are increasingly popular in many other places too, because there are boarding spots for tourists.
The current setup for walking holidays in Scotland has not allowed for adequate growth or expansion which may result in a trickling off of the walking holiday industry and a hefty financial impact to the tourism industry in general. Here are just a few potential points worth noting:
- reduction in growth of walking holiday tourism
- Decline in tourism industry
- Possible job losses?
- Possible loss of home—many people offer their homes as part of their tourism business to provide lodging like bed and breakfast accommodations.
- Saturated job market may keep some people unemployed for lengthy time periods
A few positive points are:
- Shifting tourism industry to accommodate consumer demand
- Creation of new businesses that can provide services and lodging in new locations
- Improved growth of tourism industry
- Increased income for the country from improvements
- Greater awareness of Scotland’s tourism offerings
