Portman: H for Holocaust

Natalie Portman has compared the torture scenes in new movie 'V for Vendetta' to the Holocaust.

The Israeli-born actress - who plays freedom fighter Evey in the film - claims the brutal scenes of concentration camp-style torture made her recall the atrocities inflicted on the Jews, including her grandparents.

She revealed: "Fortunately, they escaped, but their whole family perished in the Holocaust.

"There were stories in the house of what had happened to them and it wasn't talked about much. I had to go on a website to read my grandfather's descriptions of what happened to the family, but it is absolutely something I have lived with and have grown up with."

Portman hopes the film can refresh people's memories about the horrors of war so these evil never happens again.

She added to Britain's Independent newspaper: "I loved that this film is an abstract thing because, after the Holocaust, people said it would never happen again but now we have Rwanda and Bosnia.

"Maybe 'V for Vendetta' can remind us to stand up against such despotism."
