CK Hutchison Networks (UK) Ltd is seeking permission to install a 16-metre 5G mast outside the Kwik Fit on Falcon Road, Morningside.
Application documents reveal that the structure will be used to improve network connectivity and capacity to the area. Although the proposed site is in a residential neighbourhood, the applicant says that the "equipment is considered unlikely to have any material impact on the local area." The local council was also assured that although the mast will be built on a public road, it will "not impede paedestrian flow or the safety of passing motorists."
In the application, CK Hutchison Networks wrote: "In these unprecedented times of the Covid-19 pandemic, it is recognised that high-speed mobile connectivity is the lifeblood of the community; facilitating educational benefits, providing access for vital services, improving communications with the associated commercial benefits for local businesses, enabling e-commerce and working from home, as well as enjoying access to social, media and gaming for leisure time activities."
Local residents near the site have been informed of the application and are encouraged to make a comment or objection to the proposal on the Edinburgh council's planning portal on or before June 7.
