Peterborough Smart City Regeneration Project
Local council unveils low-carbon ‘smart city’ regeneration project.
20:54 27 February 2020
Peterborough City Council will be working on a project that will make it one of UK’s low-carbon smart cities. The £2million city-wide scheme, which is supported by the UK Government’s UK Research and Innovation (UKRI) arm, is expected to help cut household and business energy bills by up to 25per cent.
The city council said that the project, which is expected to be completed in 2022, will see the installation of solar and energy-from-waste electricity facilities across the region. The council has partnered with SSE’s Enterprise arm, consultancies Element Energy and Sweco UK, Cranfield University and software provider Smarter Grid Solutions for the scheme.
“We are already known as the Energy Estuary and we are a leader in large-scale renewable energy, but our Energy Strategy shows that even down to a very localised – or even individual level – change is possible,” LEP chair Lord Haskins said.
“This strategy will be an important part of the Humber’s transition towards a net-zero carbon economy, and will support the creation of new opportunities from clean growth in the region.”
The scheme is expected to attract £6.75bn of investment and create more than 20,000 jobs.
