Sir Paul McCartney has joined the campaign to free the three members of the Pussy Riot female punk band who were imprisoned after performing a protest song in Moscow. The three musicians used a song to voice their opinions of President Vladimir Putin and were promptly imprisoned after the performance early this year.
The three punk singers are currently waiting for a court verdict. They are being charged of hooliganism.
Sir Paul McCartney has defended the three and has even vowed that he will do everything in his power to help free the band members.
McCartney even wrote an open letter to the rockers behind bars. The letter is posted on his official website and reads: “I would like you to know that I very much hope the Russian authorities would support the principle of free speech for all their citizens and not feel that they have to punish you for your protest…”
He also encouraged the female musicians: “I hope you can stay strong and believe that I and many others like me who believe in free speech will do everything in our power to support you and the idea of artistic freedom.”
The Beatles legend is not the first to stand up for the imprisoned musicians. Singers Madonna and Bjork have also earlier expressed their indignation at the band’s fate. Supporters of the band insist that jailing the musicians violates their artistic freedom.
