North Somerset CCTV Cameras Remain Off After Upgrade

Dozens of CCTV cameras across North Somerset remain switched off as the council works on upgrading them.

North Somerset Council admits that some of the 71 cameras across the district have remained switched off due to work to upgrade them. Information as to how many are switched off and the locations of the affected CCTV is yet to be released. 

 

The work to upgrade the CCTV system, which includes replacing the old analogue cameras with digital ones, started in May. The upgrade, which costs £400,000, would see higher-tech cameras provide clearer, better images which will help when bringing prosecutions. 

 

North Somerset Council spokesman Nick Yates said: “Our public space surveillance system (CCTV) is undergoing a complete upgrade and certain cameras will be ‘offline’ while this takes place.

 

“The upgrade to the CCTV system continues and once complete will provide better coverage and better quality images.

 

“I cannot say which cameras might be out of action but the cameras are just one of the crime prevention and detection tools available.”

 

The current cameras have been in place for more than 20 years. 45 are located in Weston-super-Mare, 11 in Nailsea, nine in Clevedon and six in Portishead.
