Nominet Trust, the UK’s leading social tech investor, has identified four emerging technologies they think will change life as we know it. These are:
1. Blockchain – This is the decentralised ledger technology that underpins bitcoins. The technology is already being used in meaningful projects. An example is an initiative called Alice, which uses the technology to restore trust in charitable giving and helping homeless people in London.
2. Artificial intelligence – AI is breaking ground in many services, including education and healthcare. AI-enable chatbots are now being used to provide advice for people with mental health conditions to help them get the medical services they need ASAP. Also, a company named Zebra is now using AI to scan medical images that can detect cancerous cells.
3. Bionics – The Nominet Trust is convinced that bionics as well as bioelectronics will have a deeper impact this year. A company named BrainGate has developed an implant that can be used to restore a level of independence in paralysed individuals.
4. Autonomous vehicles – AV refers to driverless cars and more. It also includes projects, such as the Zanzibar Mapping Initiative that is using drone to gather information that can be used to monitor and respond to floods and diseases. There is also Cyberworks in Canada that has developed a sensor module that can be used to control a wheelchair either with a touchscreen or voice.
