Nokia and Qualcomm Technologies team up to carry out over-the-air 5G tests
22:03 15 February 2018
Nokia and Qualcomm Technologies team up to carry out over-the-air tests using commercially-available Nokia AirScale base station and Qualcomm Technologies 5G NR UE prototypes. The interoperability testing is an important brick on the path to a commercial 5G network roll-out in 2019.
Jane Rygaard, Head of 5G Marketing for Nokia, said: “Open collaboration and interoperability is essential in the development of 5G. The interoperability testing we’ve been doing with Qualcomm Technologies has been essential to ensure the network infrastructure side from Nokia and the device side from Qualcomm, in order to understand the 5G NR specification needs that our customers will implement”.
The two mobile tech giants are expected to work together again to initiate 5G New Radio field trial collaborations with a series of mobile network operators throughout 2018. Telecoms that have been reported to be included in the trials include Deutsche Telekom, BT/EE, Elisa, KT, LGU+, NTT DOCOMO and Vodafone Group.
Qualcomm has announced the development of the world’s first commercial 5G modem in October alongside a reference 5G smartphone design. The American chipmaker is currently working with 18 smartphone makers to produce the first batch of 5G-ready phones which are expected to hit the market next year.
