The Flir One ($199) and the Flir One Pro ($399) are dual-camera dongles that feature military-grade technology. They are about the size of a roll of Life Savers candy and attach to the lightning port of a phone. Both models are compatible with Android and Apple.
The Flir One, which is perfect for most home applications, has an 80x60-pixel resolution thermal camera that can indicate temperatures from -4F to 248F. The Pro, on the other hand, has 160x120-pixel thermal sensor that can register temperature as high as 752F. It can also display multiple spot temperature readings onscreen. Both models use standard imaging and offer about 40 minutes worth of use before they need to be recharged.
When used at home, users can see clogged or leaking pipes through a drywall as well as a faulty wire beneath the hood of the car, among others. Cold air in a home’s insulation or from poorly installed windows is also visible. Both models can also be used if your pet decides to suddenly run away at nighttime; using the camera, you can easily spot your dog or your cat by its heat signature.
