Newport City Council has recently received an application for a new 5G mobile base station in Newport City Centre. This follows a proposal to upgrade the rooftop site of Clarence House on Clarence Place to provide 5G coverage to residents and businesses in the area.
Service providers Three and EE are working on enhancing 5G coverage across Newport and a number of their proposals have already been approved, one of which will see a 65-foot high pole on Cardiff Road. The 5G mast will provide faster service with the ability to handle more data, Three and EE have claimed.
The local council has approved plans to upgrade the existing rooftop of the 12-storey, 42-metre Clarence House because it is a "significantly less visually intrusive solution than introducing a new ground-based installation" but admits that "there would be very marginal intensification in the amount of equipment" due to the extra requirements needed for 5G.
The document added that the mast would not detract from the character of the area and that it would deliver immense benefits of the new 5G connectivity.
5G technology is expected to be fully rolled out across the UK by 2027. Its benefits include faster data download and upload speeds and allowing users to access mobile internet using more devices at the same time.
