Proposals to install 41 large digital screens across Newcastle has been criticised by Newcastle City Council leader Nick Forbes.
InLinkUK and BT have submitted plans to install 41 new kiosks in time for the Great Exhibition in June. The kiosks, which could replace several old telephone boxes around the city can be used to provide free WiFi as well as free phone calls to UK numbers.
In a letter, Mr Forbes expressed his objections to the proposals saying that the installation of additional kiosks “would have a negative impact on the appearance of the area.”
He went on the say: “Of these new applications, seven are for locations on Northumberland Street alone, one of the principal shopping streets in the city, and a street which is identified as a primary pedestrian route...The City Council is currently looking at ways of improving the street-scene including decluttering the area to improve pedestrian movement. “The introduction of further phone kiosks would add to the clutter and would have a negative impact on the appearance of the area and the shopping experience of residents and visitors, including the visually impaired.”
