Smith & Nephew could soon be building a hi-tech medical hub in Hull.
This follows the firm's announcement last month confirming its plans to leave the city after 166 years. The existing site on Hessle Road currently employs around 800 people.
Mark Jones, Hull City Council's director of regeneration, said that creating a significant new development that attracts skilled jobs at the site is a priority.
He said: "We are working with both Smith & Nephew and the government's Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy to ensure the move to Melton will see the current workforce being maintained and also to ensure there is a legacy left in Hull. There is a strong commitment from the company and the department to work with us.
"The main focus will be to enable all those workers who can move to the new location in Melton to do so. It's very much at the top of our agenda to ensure everybody who can retain their job does so. As for the current site, we will be trying to build up a medical-based hi-tech hub there although it's very early days on that."
