Dutch cybersecurity council urges the government to address IoT security issues to prevent serious consequences.

Security issues remain to be the biggest problem in the field of Internet of Things (IoT). Due to its massive impact, the Cybersecurity Council of the Netherlands has urged the government to set tougher requirements for IoT devices and applications to prevent or minimise IoT security issues.

 

In their report, they pointed out that a huge number of devices being connected to the internet and other devices are not secured. They also raised other major concerns, including the complexity of managing connected systems as well as the growing amount of diverse data collected through the IoT.

 

The report urged the government to take necessary measures as early as possible to prevent serious consequences in the future. Some of its recommendations include setting up a register of unsafe equipment that is readily available to the public and setting quality standards for equipment that can be reinforced through access privileges, certification and kite marks.

 

The report also highlighted the importance of raising awareness among consumers and drawing on legal liability when problems occur. It added that IoT application providers and producers need to implement better security protocols.
