Happy as Lazzaro
While Lazarillo de Tormes is never specifically named as the protagonist of Happy as Lazzaro, they are most certainly linked by their penchant for mishaps and enduring cheerfulness. Directed by Alice Rohrwacher, Happy as Lazzaro tells the story of Lazzaro, a peasant, whose life is forever changed when he’s asked by a young nobleman to help him orchestrate his own kidnapping.
Private Life
Written and directed by Tamara Jenkins, Private Life stars Paul Giamatti and Kathryn Hahn as a couple struggling to keep their marriage intact while traversing the world of adoption and assisted reproduction. As the perfect representation of overeducated metropolitan coterie, Rachel and Richard are forced to face their human frailties and begin to question what it means to be a person if you aren’t able to create new life.
The Ballad of Buster Scruggs
While The Ballad of Buster Scruggs won’t go down as the greatest Coen brothers’ film ever produced, it has all the markings of the weird and wonderful delights the brothers always offer. Presented as a Western anthology, the film is broken up into 6 stories centred on life long before the rise of online casino NZ in the Old West during the 19th century post-Civil War era and stars Tim Blake Nelson, Willie Watson, and Clancy Brown.
Okja
If you’re looking for the ultimate tear-jerker, you can’t go wrong Okja. Netflix and Brad Pitt’s production house Plan B joined together to create Okja as an intense commentary on capitalistic consumerism. Mija, a young girl in South Korea, forms an intense bond with a creature whom she names Okja , but when the Mirando conglomerate take Okja to New York City, Mija sets out on a mission to rescue her beloved friend.
Roma
Written and directed by Alfonso Cuarón, Roma is a film that was no doubt inspired by famous Italian director Federico Fellini and tells the story of class conflict and fragmented relationships in intensely beautiful black-and-white. Cuarón took the honour of Best Director at the most recent Academy Awards for Roma – which he also produced, shot, and edited – and upon watching this masterpiece it quickly becomes apparent why.
The Other Side of the Wind
