Written and directed by Tamara Jenkins, Private Life stars Paul Giamatti and Kathryn Hahn as a couple struggling to keep their marriage intact while traversing the world of adoption and assisted reproduction. As the perfect representation of overeducated metropolitan coterie, Rachel and Richard are forced to face their human frailties and begin to question what it means to be a person if you aren’t able to create new life.

The Ballad of Buster Scruggs

While The Ballad of Buster Scruggs won’t go down as the greatest Coen brothers’ film ever produced, it has all the markings of the weird and wonderful delights the brothers always offer. Roma

Written and directed by Alfonso Cuarón, Roma is a film that was no doubt inspired by famous Italian director Federico Fellini and tells the story of class conflict and fragmented relationships in intensely beautiful black-and-white. Cuarón took the honour of Best Director at the most recent Academy Awards for Roma – which he also produced, shot, and edited – and upon watching this masterpiece it quickly becomes apparent why.
