Late last year, Netflix launched a few mobile games for its movie and television app. The initial rollout for these games was to start with just a few of them and lock them behind adult profiles, making them pin protected so children would not have easy access. This is to allay concerns about children playing games when parents might not be aware of it.
Games Made Available Offline
Netflix makes a lot of its content available to download so that it can be accessed offline. As a Netflix subscriber, you have access to many of the movies and TV shows on Netflix while you are disconnected from the Internet, perhaps when you are on a plane or out of range of a Wi-Fi connection. The same offline service for downloads applies to Netflix’s games. Some of the games do require an online connection all the time, but Netflix is also planning for some of these to be available completely offline, once they have been downloaded onto the mobile device.
Which Games Is Netflix Offering?
Netflix is taking a videogame dive with some new properties, like Shatter, which is similar to the classic Breakout, and the racing game Asphalt Xtreme. The content provider is also adapting some of its privately owned properties to video games, including Stranger Things. The Netflix lineup of games is growing, with multiple Stranger Things games, as well as a port of Oxenfree, with many more games coming.
One of the more exciting bits of news coming out about Netflix’s video game plans is their upcoming first person shooter- Into the Dead 2. This game is said to be a mash-up of shooter and runner gaming genres. Netflix currently has 14 games on its mobile platform, with more planned in the near future.
Netflix may be tackling more genres before long, especially if its current batch of mobile game proves popular among its subscribers. Recently, Netflix has been losing subscribers en masse in the United States, Europe, and other regions. In fact, its recent numbers showed that it only gained subscribers in one area- Asia. It may seek to draw in new subscribers by modifying its upcoming game lineup slightly and make them more appealing for audiences that are losing interest in Netflix.
What This Means for Mobile Gaming
This simply gives gamers another option for playing games on the go, and it is an impressive addition to Netflix’s expanding entertainment empire. The media giant is not directly competing against other gaming companies since its games will not be available on the Android, Microsoft, or Apple app stores. These games are kind of their own thing and made for Netflix users. Of course, they are also meant to attract new users and keep current subscribers on the app longer, doing more things there that hold their interest.
This is big news for Netflix subscribers who might not have heard about the initial game launch or the newer details surrounding the Netflix games. It doesn’t mean a whole lot for people who already game online or on their mobile devices. People playing สล็อตเว็บตรง or free-to-play shooters probably won’t stop their current gaming habits to spend a lot of time on Netflix. We imagine people will try the games out periodically as casual activities rather than devote hardcore gaming time to them.
We also imagine that Netflix will try out some new things with its gaming strategy, trying to figure out what works and what its target audience is. As with most of what Netflix does, the company is trying to appeal to as many people as possible in as many parts of the world as it can. This means it will probably continue to publish a wide variety of games in different genres, trying its hand at different types of games. Eventually, the company may position its mobile app as a one-stop platform for every kind of entertainment its subscribers could want, giving them little reason to go anywhere else once they open their phone. We imagine these initial few rounds of games are just the beginning for what Netflix has planned to do in order to grow their entertainment empire.
