Streaming service Netflix has announced plans to invest millions to make more shows in Britain. It has also announced a major UK expansion to open a production hub at the world-famous Shepperton Studios. The entertainment giant is set to take over 435,000sq ft at the site, which Pinewood Group has just ploughed a cool £500 million into.
16 new sound stages will be created at the site where classics, including Gladiator and Alien, were shot. 14 of the sound stages will be taken up by Netflix, but are not part of their production hub.
Netflix's chief content officer, Ted Sarandos said: 'This investment will ensure that British creators and producers have first rate production facilities and a world stage for their work.'
A new wave of shows is set to kick off production in October, including an action-fantasy movie featuring Charlize Theron.
Paul Golding, Pinewood's Group Chairman said that the expansion 'will help secure the ongoing success of the UK film and TV industry'.
Netflix, which is currently headquartered in California, has around 10million subscribers in the UK. It is now among many other tech giants looking to find their home in the UK due to limited studio availability in the US.
