Lenovo’s Motorola may just be the first smartphone manufacturer to deliver 5G to consumers. Based on a leaked image, the company’s Mod phone expansion system may allow peripherals to clip to the back of Mod-compatible phones using a magnet. The leaked image shows a bulky 5G Mod that supports USB 3.1 speed, which is sufficient for the gigabit data transfer of 5G.
Motorola senior executive John Touvannas has previously discussed the possibility of a 5G Mod 18. He said: “Without having to wait for the next-gen phone that can bring the next technology or capability, we can get to that quicker through the mod."
Aside from Lenovo, Huawei has also already promised a 5G handset. However, this is expected to be released in 2019.
In relevant news, Lenovo’s founder has recently defended the company’s decision to vote for the American firm Qualcomm’s 5G data-encoding standard over that of China’s Huawei in a 2016 vote. Huang Ying, Lenovo deputy president, who faced public backlash for the company’s “unpatriotic” move, said that the encoding spec Lenovo backed was widely supported, while only Huawei had voted for Huawei’s option.
