Around 500 soldiers were deployed to deal with “unprecedented” flooding in Yorkshire and Lancashire. A thousand more are on stand-by as new flood warnings have been issued in England, Wales, and Scotland.
Prime Minister David Cameron said the "level of the rivers plus the level of rainfall has created an unprecedented effect, and so some very serious flooding".
He added: "We will do everything we can to help people in this, their hour of need.”
Meanwhile, the City of York Council has said that it is expecting the River Ouse to reach its highest recorded level of 5.4m today. North Yorkshire Police has urged people not to travel to flooded parts of York.
Downing Street has confirmed that affected homes and businesses in Yorkshire and Lancashire would receive emergency financial assistance and access to the support package announced earlier this month for Storm Desmond’s victims.
BBC Weather forecaster Alex Deakin said that affected areas had enjoyed a drier condition on Sunday, which is expected to last until Tuesday. There is a potential for stormy weather on Wednesday.
