Following years of planning and preparations, the next generation mobile network has finally arrived in the United Kingdom and United States. 5G offers superfast internet service, which translates to better connections, smoother video streaming at higher resolutions and lag-free browsing.
5G network is currently up to 10 times faster than existing 4G. In the distant future, the technology is expected to offer download speeds 100 times faster than today’s 4G network. It is set to power a slew of new smart devices and help boost productivity and efficiency in a number of industries.
In the UK, EE was the first network to launch 5G, switching the network in six cities including Edinburgh, London, Birmingham and Manchester. The firm is also bringing the technology to additional ten cities including Bristol, Coventry, Leicester, Nottingham, Sheffield, Hull, Leeds and Liverpool.
Meanwhile, 02 launched its 5G network in December, covering Cardiff, London, Belfast, Leeds, Slough and Edinburgh. By the end of 2020, the firm will cover additional towns and cities. Meanwhile Three is yet to launch a 5G phone network but has recently launched 5G home broadband.
