Milton Keynes Council is becoming more aggressive towards its fight against litter louts and fly tippers in the city. Council leader Pete Marland has declared war against offenders saying that the council will invest in mobile CCTV and other measures to catch more offenders. The council is also considering increasing the fine for dropping litter to £150 in a bid to keep the city clean.
Cllr Marland said: “One of the top issues people raise on the doorstep is litter and fly-tipping. They are fed up of people making their area look a mess and damaging their community. We agree and it’s time to hold these people to account.”
He added: “People often ask why the council isn’t doing more to pick up more litter, and that is a fair question, although the reality is with the cuts we have to make, it’s getting harder and harder to fund reactive services.
"So we are investing more in litter picking equipment, we’re giving local communities who take pride in their own area a boost with a “deep clean,” and we will investigate if extra funding for street-cleaning is required in the next budget.”
“However no matter how much litter that is picked up someone has put it there in the first place, and so we want to reduce litter and fly-tipping before it is dumped. It is time we made sure if you don’t respect your community then there is a price to pay, so we want to boost our enforcement teams, use CCTV to catch more fly-tippers and look at increasing fines to people who drop litter.
