It was a big night for Gareth Malone and his choir, Military Wives, as they won Single of the Year at the Classic Brit Awards. The event was held at Albert Hall on October 2nd, which saw the group awarded for their Christmas chart-topper “Whenever You Are.”
Choirmaster Mr.Malone was proud and described the award - as quoted by the BBC – as “the candle on the icing of a very large cake.”
Being accompanied by the songs composers Gary Barlow and Andrew Lloyd Webber, who both played grand pianos, the group rounded off the evening by singing another hit, “Sing”, which is the Diamond Jubilee anthem song.
“Whenever You Are” was chosen by the public to be awarded over “Nessun Dorma” and other nominated classic tracks.
Mr. Malone is reported by the BBC expressing his feelings about the group: “It was very humble beginnings. It is about these women finding a voice and tonight is a great celebration of that.”
The event which was hosted by Myleene Klass, is set to be broadcast on Sunday, 7th October, at 10.15pm on ITV1.
The other big winners include Nicola Benedetti for Best Female Artist, Milos Karadalic for Breakthrough Artist of the Year, John Williams for Best Composer, and Andrea Bocelli for International Artist of the Year.
